Year 4, Session 5, Week 3
Our learners are exploring different things and applying new knowledge daily! We had a larger emphasis on interpersonal skills this week by completing several team building challenges to strengthen our tribe. When our studio community is working well together our heroes grow in academics and their character!
In art we learned about how to draw a self portrait. The heroes studied their unique features using the mirrors in the dojang and then drew a picture of themselves. After putting the final touches on their masterpieces using colored pencils, they were challenged to draw a portrait of one of their friends!
During our physics quest, the ES heroes learned about buoyancy and elasticity. They used resources to gain information about how buoyancy works and then applied it by designing a raft that would support a cup holding coins. They were challenged to create a flotation device that held more coins than the other team. Congrats to Kain and Charlie for winning the buoyancy challenge! For the elasticity experiment they had to create a rubber band rope that would support a cup holding coins. They had to add coins in increments on ten and measure how far the rope stretched. They used this experiment to collect data on how weight affects elasticity. Both teams' ropes were able to sustain the maximum amount of coins required for the challenge!
The Elementary Studio chose to participate in several team building challenges this week as a way to increase the civility and productivity within their tribe. They played charades and card games, and tried building towers out of cards. It was a great way to practice communication and overcoming difficulties.
The Montessori studio used bananas from our snack stand to make chocolate chip banana gingerbread cake! They mashed bananas, cracked eggs, and mixed the batter. The final result was topped with powdered sugar and was delicious.
In Civilization, we read about Julius Caesar and his rise to power in Rome. The learners had a socratic discussion about whether they would have made the same decision the senate did to assassinate Caesar before he became too powerful.
For Fun Friday both studios got together to watch the Mario Bros. movie! They enjoyed eating snacks on their bean bags as if they were visiting a real theater.
Several learners looked deeper at their badge plans this week and evaluated where they needed to channel their focus to achieve their goals. If you haven’t revisited your child’s badge plan in a while, this is an excellent time of the year to go over it with them and gauge their progress.
