Session 3 Weeks 1 and 2 Year 5
We had a great Children’s Business Fair on November 2nd that wrapped up our Entrepreneurship Quest! We have moved on to the Survivor Quest in preparation for our annual camping trip on November 23rd. Our heroes are so excited to start fires, build shelters, and enjoy the outdoors with their friends and families!
Quest
The ES heroes began their Survivor quest and are exploring the five basic needs of human survival: food, water, shelter, safety, and identity. They started out the week researching edible insects and plants. They were able to try two edible plants from our garden - basil and mint! Next they learned how to tie a few different types of knots and completed a teamwork challenge to untie several knots without letting go of a rope. Later they put their skills to the test creating a primitive shelter out of sticks, cloth, and string. Throughout the quest they will be trying to master three different fire starting methods - using a magnifying glass, flint and steel, and rubbing two sticks together. We are excited for them to display what they’ve learned at our camping trip on November 23rd!
ES Comms
The Elementary Studio began crafting a letter to a hero of their choice on Tuesday. They chose a person that they haven’t met but who has inspired their journey. The letters describe the lessons learned from their hero and the character traits that they admire about that person. Once their first drafts were completed they got feedback from their peers and revised. The learners researched the address of the recipient and labeled an envelope. Each person asked a question that will hopefully elicit a response back from their hero!
Art
This week we began exploring Mexico! Our heroes learned about the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead”. Day of the Dead is a cultural holiday celebrated in several Latin American countries where ancestors are remembered and celebrated. Sugar skulls, or calaveras, are a traditional symbol associated with departed loved ones on this day. Our heroes created their own sugar skulls using paper, glue, and colored pencils!
Cooking
Mrs. Molley led the learners in cooking a Mexican dish - quesadillas! Each hero was able to pick their own ingredients and place the quesadilla on the mini grill. This was a fan favorite amongst the group! The next week she brought the ingredients to make nachos!
Guest Speaker
Thank you to Mrs. Brittiny from “Blooms by Brittiny” for teaching our learners how professional flower arrangements are made and explaining your hero’s journey as a business owner! We love hearing how local entrepreneurs turned their passion into a calling!
Focus Challenge Party
All of October both studios competed in a focus challenge during core skills. Those who met the goal of getting 66 points were able to participate in a pizza party/Day of the Dead party during core skills on November 1st! Heroes had the option to get their face painted like a sugar skull - check out a few of them below!
Business Fair
We had a fabulous children’s business fair where our learners displayed great entrepreneurship! Their ideas were creative and their hard work paid off with several selling out of their product!
Party Time
Karley celebrated her birthday on November 2nd! Happy birthday Karley!!
