Year 4, Session 4, Week 5
This week our discussions focused on where the heroes felt “stuck” and how they could overcome those obstacles to reach their goals. They identified clear and intentional goal setting, perseverance, and accountability as factors that needed to be considered. Our learners are continuing to work hard through these final weeks before Christmas break!
Quest
The heroes completed their third round of the chess tournament. Presently, Charlie is in first and Kain is in second, but we still have two rounds left to go! ES continued teaching the Little Heroes new strategies in chess and learned a few from Mr. Moss. They also played “chess bingo” to earn extra rewards. Next week exhibition prep begins!
Writer’s Workshop
Writer’s Workshop consisted of the heroes finishing the final draft of their letters and having their peers review them. Next week we will learn about labeling envelopes and address them to the heroes that they chose. Fingers crossed that one of them receives a letter back!
Civilization
During our civilization discussions, the elementary studio learned about the gladiators of Rome and Rome’s war with Carthage. They read about General Claudius Pulcher and his sacred chickens that he used to predict his success in battle. The heroes discussed whether military leaders should make war decisions based on their faith, and if a leader’s legacy should be determined by their successes or failures.
Art
This week we made winter wishing cones! Mrs. Tanksley brought pinecones from her yard and the learners painted the tips white to look like snow. Then they each wrote a word that they wished for on leaves that they decorated. A bow and a bell were added for finishing touches. Early finishers also made a 3D star!
Baking
The Little Heroes baked bread this week! They rolled out the dough, formed their own loaf, and basted it with butter and sesame seeds. They got to enjoy eating their bread while listening to a read aloud of a story during DEAR.
