Session 6 Week 4 Year 5
This week was a whirlwind of experiences and real life learning. On Thursday, we had a cubby clean out and one learner realized they had forgotten a tupperware container in there for quite some time! Mrs. Tanksley took a sample of the mold that was growing on the old food and placed it under a microscope so all of the heroes could see what it looked like up close.
Quest
On Monday, the ES heroes learned about how dental records can be used to identify victims or suspects involved in a crime. They made impressions of their own teeth using styrofoam plates and compared the impressions to bite marks that a mystery person made in cheese. Tuesday, the learners completed a science experiment where they extracted a strand of their DNA from gargled salt water using soap and alcohol. They explored how DNA was discovered, what it looks like, and how it is unique to each person. On Wednesday, they collected swabs from their hands and their laptops to create bacteria cultures. They will observe these cultures as they grow over the next several days to see if the bacteria matches the sample from their computers, and also if it looks different compared to the other learners in the studio!
ES Comms
In Comms, the ES heroes gathered data to strengthen their rebuttals for their game debates. They took the feedback from the first mock debate last week and applied it to the second mock debate we had on Thursday. The learners are so excited to share their arguments at the exhibition!
Art
During art our learners got to enjoy fresh air and sunshine while collaborating on a giant picture! They used markers, color pencils, and crayons to create a masterpiece that’s several feet long. From rainbows and princesses, to volcanoes and beaches, there was so much creativity and fun displayed!
Cooking
Mrs. Molley led the heroes who earned Fun Friday in making chocolate crackle! Chocolate crackle is a dessert made from rice krispies, melted chocolate, and sprinkles. The learners loved it!
Fun Friday
For Fun Friday our heroes earned a movie and watched “The Rescuers Down Under” to go along with our theme of solving cases in quest but also learning about Australia! The learners who earn the most points each week through core skills and exhibiting heroic traits get to sit on a bean bag during the movie!!
