Session 2 Week 3 Year 5
This week the learners started a new challenge that will last throughout the month of October! The “So Focused It’s Scary” challenge lets the heroes in both studios earn “focus points” during silent core skills for things like not talking, setting challenging goals, and getting up one time or less. If they meet the focus point goal for the day they earn a daily reward, but they are also acquiring points for an end of the month reward. Every hero that earns 66 or more focus points by the end of October will get to participate in a pizza and outdoor game party during core skills on Friday, November 1st!
Quest
In quest, the ES heroes began the week learning about assembly lines and their efficiency to production. They tested out their own sandwich making assembly line, and then discussed modifications that needed to be made, and tried again until they had a system they were satisfied with. Afterwards, they donated the sandwiches that they made to the Arc of Ascension! They discovered that making others happy through donating made themselves feel good as well.
Later in the week they learned about counting currency, making change for items at the store, and budgeting a grocery list for a family dinner. They used a weekly grocery ad to complete a challenge of planning their meal for a family of four with a set amount of money. These activities will better equip them with the tools they need to handle financial transactions at the children’s business fair November 2nd!
Art
This week in art we began learning about Canada! The heroes learned that Canada is famous for maple syrup, some Canadians speak French, and that the maple leaf is a symbol on their flag. In art we created three dimensional pieces using paper, colored pencils, a wooden plaque, and real leaf stems to represent the changing of leaf colors throughout the seasons. The heroes also wrote the different seasons in French and modge podged them onto their plaque.
Thailand Guest Speaker
Thank you to Suttikan Jaran-Steib for being our guest speaker this week to share her knowledge of Thailand! She brought traditional Thai clothes, jewelry, and food to show our learners. The heroes were able to try mango coconut rice, smell fish sauce, and get their names written in Thai! She also taught them a few phrases in the Thai language. A great time was had by all!
Cooking
Mrs. Molley led the heroes in making Canadian meat pies! The heroes were able to make their own individual mini pies by putting the meat in the crust and pressing it closed with a fork. This recipe was a hit amongst the learners!
