Year 4, Session 6, Week 2
Week 2 of Session 6 has been all about growing our focus along with our plants! We have been learning so much about plants this week and getting our hands dirty. Both studios also participated in a challenge to earn points based on their focus during core skills.
During our gardening quest this week we learned about different methods of scarification. We are testing out three different ways of scarification to see which causes seeds to germinate the fastest. The ES heroes also built a light maze to test if a plant will change the direction it is growing based on the direction of the light. Our older learners also explored different types of soil and did a few experiments to determine the composition of the soil behind the school. Finally, we wrapped up the week learning about the different parts of flowers, and the Elementary Studio made their own fictitious flower labeling the parts.
The Little Heroes’ studio took on two big baking projects this week! They made a confetti cake to enjoy during their afternoon snack, and also baked a chocolate cake for the parents to eat during the parent coffee visit on Thursday.
In art we continued to study Claude Monet and his impressionist style of paintings. This week we looked at his work depicting bridges and each hero made their own scene with a bridge. Some learners decided to add lily pads beneath the bridge based off of the work we did last week!
In Writer’s Workshop we explored synonyms and the heroes were challenged to find more colorful word choices to use in their gratitude letters. They began drafting the reasons why they are grateful for the person whom the letter is about.
The Little Heroes decided to come in costumes on Tuesday which led to a fun-filled PE! We had butterflies, fairies, and karate kids practicing martial arts and navigating obstacle courses.
This week the Little Heroes competed against the Elementary Studio in a “Focus Challenge”. Each learner could earn points during core skills for things such as not sitting by their friends, getting up 1 or fewer times, and earning points in math or reading. All of our heroes worked hard this week and many noticed they were able to accomplish a lot more. The winner of the challenge was the Little Heroes!
