Year 4, Session 2, Week 3
We have had a jam packed week at ALA! We went on our first field trip of the school year and played at Discovery Park. There was also a lot of learning - Kain set a new school record for weekly points in core skills (math, reading, writing) with over 1,600! Congrats to Kain and all ES heroes who met/exceeded their goals this week.
Writer’s Workshop - Memoirs
This week in Writer’s Workshop we continued drafting memoirs. We read “All the Places to Love” by Patricia MacLachlan and analyzed her use of prepositions. Then the heroes were challenged to write about a place that is special to them. On Thursday, we read “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen and used this story as inspiration for their next memoir about a special day in their lives.
Quest - Build-a-Business
The ES learners discovered economical terms such as “profit”, “sunk costs”, “fixed costs”, and “revenue” as we navigated a scenario about Sally who started her own art business. They applied this knowledge to the business they are creating for the Children’s Business fair and used it to price the products/services they intend to sell.
Little Hero’s Studio
The Little Heroes baked a strawberry cake on Wednesday. They took turns cracking eggs, whisking, and cutting up fresh strawberries for the top! Their Montessori work focused on the letter “D” and they learned about Deinonychus.
PE
Kain from the ES studio designed a game with a kickball and bases that he taught to the Little Heroes. He coached them on how to kick the ball, encouraged taking turns, and cheered them on as they ran around the bases. It was a great display of leadership and teamwork within the whole group!
Field Trip
We had our first field trip of the school year on Thursday. We spent the morning at Discovery Park and had the whole park to ourselves! Everyone had a blast running around and playing games together.
