Session 6, Week 4, Year 2
This week, for quest the Eagles got to choose a topic from the Story of Energy Quest and dive deep into the research! They were able to work in pairs in order to help each other and make a presentation for the group! We also learned about natural energy sources where the Eagles made their own wind powered machine!
At Active, the Eagles have a lot of freedoms but that comes with great responsibility. Our school is a tribe, who says "we are not alone". Teamwork is a powerful tool, the ability to share the load and rely on people while also doing your part in fixing a problem is a valuable skill.
Story of Pruning apple trees this weekend: There are two large apple trees growing in my front yard. They have been there since before I was born. They haven't been pruned in years and last year they didn’t produce much fruit because of it. I thought I could take on the challenge of pruning these two trees. I watched a few Youtube videos, talked to some people, and observed the nearby apple orchard to see how they did their winter pruning. I went at it over the weekend, and hacked off many branches which I thought were the right ones to hack. I later watched some more videos to make sure I did the right thing, and the more research I did, the more nervous I became. Now, I’m not quite sure if I helped the tree or damaged the tree because of my cuts. It turns out there are specific places to make the cuts on the branches and certain branches to cut. This is because each cut I make now will GREATLY impact its future health and fruit growth. I may not see the effects today, or tomorrow, or even next week. But come next growing season, I will be able to see if I made the right cuts or not. This is the discussion the Eagles had this week. What branches are they going to cut off in order to help them grow?
In the past year, we have seen transformations in the learners' confidence and fluency, eliminate stage fright and speak fearlessly. Every week, there are opportunities for the Eagles to improve their overall communication skills, increase self-esteem and confidence, plan and organize their thoughts, express their ideas in front of the class and develops leadership skills. There is no judgment, only feedback from each other to help the Eagles improve!
Mr. Molley brought in a surprise for the Eagles! They got to see and hold some baby turkeys. They were so excited!
