For over 25 years, our family has been working with children and families in Ascension Parish through martial arts, afterschool, and summer programs. Hero's Journey Academy is a natural extension of that long-term work — built on real relationships, real responsibility, and a deep belief in what children are capable of.

Who Hero's Journey Academy Is For?

Hero's Journey Academy is not a traditional school, and it isn't designed to fit every child or every family. Most of our learners don't arrive unusually independent or confident — they grow into those qualities through practice, support, and real responsibility.

A strong fit for learners and families who:

  • Want children to learn how to take ownership of their learning, set goals, and track progress.
  • Believe character, responsibility, and capability are essential to real academic success.
  • See challenge, struggle, and persistence as an important part of growth.
  • Appreciate an environment where learners support one another and hold each other accountable.
  • Are open to guides who ask questions and provide guardrails instead of directing every step.
  • Are choosing Hero’s Journey Academy intentionally, not simply trying to leave their current school.

This environment may not be a good fit for families who:

  • Prefer a highly adult-directed classroom with constant instruction and oversight.
  • Expect grades or homework to be the primary source of motivation.
  • Want adults to manage behavior, pacing, and decisions moment-to-moment.
  • Are uncomfortable with children having real responsibility for their choices and work.
  • Are seeking structure through control rather than ownership.

"Hero's Journey Academy is intentionally different. That difference works best when families and learners understand—and embrace—the responsibility that comes with it."
